If you are planning a building project for £10-£20,000 or more it would be advisable carry out Quantity Surveying as it can help you to save money on purchasing building materials in the following ways:

- When you know the quantities before buying everything you require, you will be able to negiotiate better discounts with materials suppliers. For example if you are buying £10000 of materials maybe 10% but if you are buying £30000 worth of goods 30% may be offered

- After you know what materials you need - you can then decide if some of them will be standard or non-standard. Armed with this information you can work out what areas you are able to save money and by doing this you can save up to 40% on your materials cost.

What is Quantity Surveying?

Quanitity Surveying is a detailed quote of building materials that you need for your project sorted by type of materials and their quantities. It is possible to add standard prices for these materials but of course can be varied dependent on your choice on the quality of thematerials. For example, if you build a one storey extension (5m*5m) you will need to have 8,000 bricks...30kg of plaster and so on.

Effective Quantity Surveying usually costs up to 5% of the total amount of the project, depending on the project's scale.
